Chubb’s Ballroom

Maple Grove

Chubb’s Ballroom was located on Eagle Lake in Maple Grove, Minnesota.  The name was variously spelled as Chubb’s, Chubb, and Chubbs.

Mike Rejsa wrote to say:

The property on the east side of Eagle Lake south of 64th Ave. N was sold off to developers as the “Chubbs Addition” parcel.  After an entertaining afternoon perusing old aerial photos at MHAPO, I’m certain I’ve located it. The building appears throughout the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, finally disappearing by 1971.

A newspaper search uncovered classified ads for New Year’s Eve events for 1957, 1958, and 1962.

In the summer of 1963, Steve Wahrer of the Trashmen improvised an early version of “Surfin’ Bird” at Chubb’s to great applause, giving the song its debut.  Disc Jockey and hop host Bill Diehl was there and insisted that the band record the song, and it was recorded that fall.  (Minneapolis Star Tribune, January 23, 2015)
