33 1/2 South 7th Street
Minneapolis
Denny’s Bar was located across from the famous Forum Cafeteria in Downtown Minneapolis. It’s unclear when it opened, but it was withing six months from the end of Prohibition. The proprietors were H.P. Denny and George E. Thomas, who obtained their liquor license on September 12, 1933. The first ad was found on October 13, 1933. The house orchestra was led by Joe Jung, “the Fiddlin’ Fiend,” who played jazz violin.

In November 1933, the club featured June Hurley, the Northwest’s Kate Smith!

In April 1934, Denny’s was caught up in a massive raid for selling liquor without a license. Soon afterwards the owners applied for a dance hall permit.

Frequent entertainers were Johnson and Dean, a black dance team.
