Twin Cities Music Highlights

Minnesota Music Awards 2003

This is a very incomplete listing of the 2003 MMAs.  Information comes from an article in the Walker Pilot Independent, published on October 24, 2003, and posted on moondancejam.com.  Information also came from articles in the Minneapolis Star Tribune by Chris Riemenschneider dated September 12 and 26, 2003.  The Strib had gone to posting the complete list of winners online, which, of course, is no longer there.  I also missed the City Pages’ ballot.  I have fixes for these problems in motion, but in the meantime, here is the information I have.

I apologize for any misspellings of anyone’s name; it could be from the source, or it could be from my typing.  Please contact me if you need to have something corrected.  Thanks!

For other years, see MINNESOTA MUSIC AWARDS.

DATE:  September 24, 2003

PLACE:   O’Gara’s Garage, St. Paul

NOTES:

The MMA’s co-president was Mick Spence.

Awards were given out in 56 categories, at a ceremony that was decidedly lower key than 2002’s ballroom/formal dress affair.

Kurt Jorgensen virtually swept the awards.

PRODUCERS:  Jack and Rachel Thibault of T.E.A. Productions

PRESENTERS: (Partial list)

  • St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly
  • Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak
  • John Hines
  • Bob Berglund
  • Bill and Kathy Bieloh, owners of Moondance Jam

LIVE PERFORMANCES

  • Big John Dickerson
  • Johnny Cash Tribute by Sherwin Linton
  • Tribute to the late Famous Dave’s soundman Mike Nichols by his 11-year-old daughter, Tessa Nichols-Mead

**Those awards I know are in bold.  I don’t know what the categories were in 2003, but I’ll keep these up to avoid retyping if/when I get the list.***
